Who Are You: Your Identity in Christ

What defines you? What gives value to your life? Many of us would answer this question by talking about our jobs, families, skills, and hobbies. Women's lives are often more subject to change than men's, as our kids go through different stages of growth and our careers tend to be more flexible and on-and-off. We may define ourselves by our roles — mother, teacher, friend — our talents, or our blessings. When those things change or are lost, we wonder, “Who am I now?”

The Bible says that the two most important things about you are that you have been created in the image of God (Gen. 1:26) and, if you've been saved, you've been redeemed by the blood of Jesus (2 Cor. 5:17). My dear friend, how I long for you to let these truths take root in your heart! Your life matters because the God of the universe made you… on purpose… to reflect His beauty and glorify Him. And if that isn't enough, He also sent His precious Son to die on a cross so that you could be forgiven and become part of His family (John 3:16, Rom. 8:15)!

Here's how this truth can change our daily lives. Once I realize that I am made in God's image, I will see the value of every human life — even those who don't yet know Him, who still reflect His beauty, sometimes in broken ways. And for those who do know Him, He is changing us bit by bit into the image of His gracious Son (2 Cor. 3:18). So even if life takes away our defining roles, relationships, or blessings, we are still His children. He still knows who we are, even when we are uncertain of our own identity, and there is great freedom in that knowledge.

You are His creation, His beloved daughter. Let those truths be enough for your heart today.
